Florida Shrimp: Wild and Wonderful!

Chef Michelle Bernstein

Michelle Bernstein’s signature approach to “luxurious comfort food” is featured at her namesake restaurant, Michy’s, located in the new “upper east side” of Miami.  This Miami native’s combined Jewish and Latino heritage has instilled her with a passion for culture, travel, food and the art of food preparation. “The food I love to create is simple, yet satisfying and healthy,” says Bernstein.  “Pure, clean flavors melded with traditional accents.”

At Michy’s, Bernstein uses only fresh seasonal ingredients presented in a casual intimate setting. This cozy and approachable restaurant is what Bernstein has always dreamed of owning with her husband David Martinez.  Michy’s has received “Top 50 Restaurants in the Country” from Gourmet Magazine, “Best New Restaurant 2006” from Food and Wine Magazine, made the “Top Hot List 2006” from Bon Appétit Magazine, made Condé Nast’s “Hot List 2007”, “Hottest New Restaurant” from New York Magazine and finally “4 Stars” from The Miami Herald”.

After graduating from Johnson & Wales University in Miami, Chef Bernstein’s culinary talent was quickly recognized when she began working with several award-winning restaurants including Red Fish Grill, the Strand and Tantra in Miami Beach.  She also trained with renowned Chef Jean Louis Palladin, in Washington D.C., and sharpened her culinary skills at Alison on Dominick and Le Bernardin in New York.

She currently hosts the hit public television series Check, Please! South Florida, defeated Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America, was a Top Chef judge, and co-hosted the Food Network's Melting Pot. Twice a Beard Award nominee as Best Southeastern Chef, she awaits release of her first cookbook.
